New Canaan’s Zach Allen is one of five Boston College football players to be named to Athlon’s Preseason All-America teams, which were announced on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive end, Allen was one of just two defensive linemen nationally to reach 100 tackles during the 2017 season. He finished with 100 tackles and six sacks, and also had 15.5 tackles for a loss, ranking in the top 10 in program history.

Allen, a senior, was named to the fourth team, is joined on Athlon’s preseason All-American list by sophomore running back A.J. Dillon on the second team, senior defensive back Lukas Denis on the third team, and senior offensive lineman Chris Lindstrom and senior punt returner Michael Walker on the fourth team.

Boston College tied for third nationally with the five preseason All-Americans.

Allen’s strong junior season and postseason accolades included one of the region’s highest honors, as he and RB Dillon each received the 79th annual George “Bulger” Lowe Award, also known as “New England’s Heisman Trophy.”

The Bulger Lowe Award is given by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Awards Committee, and recognizes New England’s best offensive and defensive players in the NCAA Bowl Subdivision/Football Championship Subdivision (FBS/FCS).

Allen was also named the MVP of the Eagles’ defensive line, and was an All-ACC honorable mention.

The Eagles were 7-5 during the regular season and lost to Iowa, 27-20, in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. In that game, Allen collected seven tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack.

Earlier this year, Allen announced he would forgo the 2018 NFL Draft and remain for his senior year at Boston College, where he is majoring in finance.

“We return so many guys next year and it’s going to be a really special team,” Allen said at the time. “We have a chance to do something that hasn’t been done here in a very long time. I definitely wanted to be a part of that. I love BC, I love my friends and wanted to spend another year with them and get my degree. It was a tough decision but I have good people around me — my coaches, my family. We all sat down and came up with the decision.”

The Eagles will kick off the 2018 season with a home game against in-state foe UMass at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 1.
